BEACH CLEAN UP

A big problem we have in the world – plastic all around and especially in the water.

PUSS!

//Hey loves! Before we left Lombok we decided to do something very important in Gerupuk. We gathered a big group that did a beach clean up! It’s a big problem here (and in a lot of places in the world), all the plastic that is used daily and all the plastic that ends up in nature/waters and everywhere. When you’re here you realize it’s a problem, partly because they’re not educated here about what plastic does and there’s not really a great waste management here. Everything is starting but it takes time. We’ve talked a lot about plastic lately, but I haven’t mentioned it here. One reason is because it feels like you can never do right, one is because people think that you’re just trying to look good for doing it and there’s always something to complain about. But – I will not care about that now because I still think it’s valuable to talk about some simple things you can do. We collected 250 kilos in 2 hours, we were around 25 people (we asked the locals that lives right next to it if they could join, in that way they will hopefully start thinking about it). Such a cool feeling afterwards and what a difference it made on the beach! Of course more will come up from the water and I’m just thinking about all the animals… Terrible! Some easy things we’ve changed lately and that I asked the plastic professional that joined us for the beach clean up about. The tips are:

– One time use plastic is really bad, it’s the kind of plastic that you just use once. Always bring a bag when you go shopping and you don’t need small plastic bags for fruit, it’s totally fine to just take them as they are, you usually rinse fruit/veggies before you eat them anyways. Try it!

– Say no to plastic straws! Such an easy thing to do and in the end it saves a lot.

– Buy food containers that you can bring if you buy take away food. We’ve done it the last few months and it’s nothing weird with that, you just ask the place you order from if they can put the food in your own box and that way you take away the one time plastic boxes.

– Have your own bottle you refill, there’s lots of places that can refill it and places where you can just refill yourself. That will be my new routine – always bring a water bottle! Same goes for coffee, if you usually buy take away – bring your own cup with a lid!

Those are a few small and easy tips that still makes a huge difference in the end. I’ve said to Jon that I want to do an experiment when we’re coming back home, I want to try a week with no plastic. I think it will be really hard but I’ll let you know in advance and you can join! :-) If you have any tips on other easy things to change please write it here, we can all help with different things! HUGS!

    Hi Janni,

I’m so extremely happy to read this post.
My attention for the environment has increased in the last year, because I became so much more grateful for what nature has to offer. It makes me sad to see how everything is changing, and this is also very sad for our future children.

But you are right that many people still are negative, saying that you are still flying and driving cars… But if we all think that it makes no sense to do a few things right because you do this or that which is bad for the environment, then we won’t get anywhere.

It’s already so good to start with a few things like you guys do, or want to do. A beach cleanup, no plastic bags, … If we all look at what we can do instead of what we can’t do, things can change a lot.

Here are a few more tips:

~ If possible, use a bike or public transport instead of the car.
~ Buy fruit and vegetables from your own country. You can check that on the packaging or on the signs. A mango from Peru has to be transported all the way tho your country and that is a burden on the environment.
~ Use low-energy or LED lamps. An incandescent lamp consumes so much more energy (and is also more expensive to use).

These are simple things, but often people are not aware of them.
That said, thanks again for this post, Janni. It’s so good that people who have a big influence on a large audience start talking about the environment.
Of course there will always be a few negative comments, but let’s all focus on the positive ones.

    Have a nice day! :)
    Naomi xx

YAY, finally you brought this up – I really appreaciate it! <3
I'm very happy to hear that you guys are also thinking this global issue, and making your moves in order to make the world a better place for all. I hope you and Michaela could talk about this topic in the podcast, make take some scientist to talk with you to bring some facts to the discussion. It would be great to hear how you are trying to avoid plastic, and if it's possible in a family with small kids.
Still, I wonder if it's only the locals and their lack of education that cause the huge amount of plastic in the ocean, because I've understood that the plastic from all around the world end up there.. I'm from Finland, and even though we have one of the best waste management system in the world, education is not the only solution – people really need to take their time to bring the knowledge into action, and also sacrifice some of the advantages of high standards of living that we have achieved.

    Keep up the good work!

    Så bra och viktigt inlägg!!

Yay good for you!! This is so important! I’m definitely going to do the no plastic for a week -challenge with you. I’ve wanted to do it for a long time but it’s so hard. Maybe we can do it together!

Thank you for this post, using your audience to raise awareness about this major issue is amazing !
It always starts with small changes but if everyone does a bit of it then it will be better.
Educating the locals is a nice step but they’re not the responsible of this.. This is global consumption of big countries in America, Europe and Asia that are more to blame..

Also, really interested in your No-plastic challenge, I tried it and realized that we cannot live 0% plastic free (make-up, hygiene stuff, etc are all made with plastic at some point..) unless becoming a total hippie it’s very hard.. Curious to see yours !

    xx

Yessss, finally something happened! I´m so happy about that. I believe the Key is to talk about it. Some people just don´t know what´s going on. So talk talk talk and show what every single person could do!

For sure, its complex and you have to research a lot, but you learn a lot during this process !
There are a lot onlineshops for make-up, hygiene etc., just google it! It´s important that buy regional (no shipping, flying)
I recommend lovelydaybotanicals.com (its vegan and Glass – germany)

I also recommend dariadaria on instagram. She´s the very best Example. Just look at her collection of experiences.

I’m so happy to read this post from a famous blogger! I already do all of the above, bring my own glass cups to buy lentils or flour, bring lunch in a glass box, use glass bottle, commute with bicycle or on foot, use paper q-tips instead of plastic… I’d also like to point out to the smokers that cigarette filters are also made of plastic ;)

So nice that you have started to think more about sustainability and nature and that you share these things with your followers. I really think it makes a difference when a roll model as you show the way! One thing I have been thinking about is your several collaborations with fast fashion brands such as Nelly and Gina Tricot. I would love to hear your thoughts about the topic since it can’t be described as ethical or sustainable and that you would also raise awareness of fast fashion and it’s costs since there is more that everyone of us (followers) can do to help to save our planet :)

:D Keep going!

    Sluta flyg istället

  • Angelica says:
